Chapter Twenty-Nine

India stood on shaking legs, staring at the furniture and bric-a-brac in the window of the flea market, hoping her courage wouldn’t desert her.

The evening before, while in the pub with Jez, she had suddenly had a revelation that the time had come to find Noah. She didn’t want to mention this to Jez, though, in case she changed her mind.

Maybe it was Jez declaring his love for her recently that was making her feel able to face anything, however challenging. But for some reason, she felt strong enough now to face whatever her father had to say.

Despite feeling brave before she left home, now that she was actually here, her heart raced out of control and she had an almost overwhelming urge to turn around and run back the way she’d come. Taking a deep breath to calm her nerves, she pushed open the door to the building and stepped inside.

India looked around the dim interior of the shop, which was crammed with everything from deckchairs to cabinets full of jewellery and other treasures of all descriptions. Every available square inch of space was taken up with an eclectic mix of items, and she stared around in wonder.

‘Are you looking for anything in particular?’

The male voice cut into India’s thoughts, and she looked up to see an elderly gentleman peering out from behind a counter, crowded with yet more items for sale. Squinting at the man’s face and sparse white hair, she let out a long breath and smiled.

‘Um, no. Just browsing, thanks,’ she returned, grateful this man wasn’t her father and for now she had a reprieve. She hadn’t seen Noah since she was a small child, but she knew for certain his eyes were dark brown and certainly not vivid blue like this man’s.

‘Okay, well, if you need any help, let me know,’ said the man, turning his attention back to his paperwork on the countertop.

India wanted to ask the man where her father was, but thought it might sound silly as she wasn’t entirely sure Noah did work here. Maybe Jez had got it wrong.

While she was here, she may as well have a look around, she reasoned with herself, as an image of Ruby came into her head. She wandered around, gazing sightlessly at the wares, expecting her father to appear out of one of the nooks and crannies, which made her feel uptight and jumpy.

As India began descending a narrow staircase leading to another floor, she noticed this area was full of paintings and photographs of all descriptions. She began perusing the art collection, when her gaze was drawn to a stack of pictures leaning up against a wall, over in the far corner of the room.

A photograph right at the front of the pile looked somehow familiar, and as she bent down to peer closer, the hairs on the back of her neck stood on end.

The photo depicted a child staring happily into the lens, obviously taken at a birthday party. This
